In this presentation, you will be introduced to and participate in a modified mindfulness practice, providing a tension-relieving activity that promotes bonding and connection with others in the present moment. A particular focus will be on encouraging this practice to help families. COVID-19 has brought with it a number of losses affecting several areas for families such as employment, education and caregiving children/seniors. Physical isolation has brought with it tension and challenge as family members have been confined to spend their daily waking hours together in their homes. As a grief specialist, Eleanor will share with you the 3-A Coping Framework: Acknowledge, Assess, Assist that she developed to address adverse circumstances involving loss such as those brought on by COVID-19. She will describe the modified mindfulness practice she applies as an assisting tool under her 3-A Coping Framework. Through demonstration, you will get an opportunity to see how the mindfulness exercises can be practiced by family members together in pairs or groups for relieving tension, bonding and initiating connection. These exercises are designed to accommodate people of any age and cognitive level, and they are based on Eleanor’s book “Mindfulness Exercises for Dementia: A Guide for Professionals and Family Caregivers”.
